Today marks the day when I've lived on earth for a quarter-century. For most of that time, I've dabbled in creating games and stories; experiences of different kinds.
I want to be a force in the creation of interactive media with a heart and with a conscience. Not keep audiences chained to addiction, but send them out into the immeasurable beauty of the real world equipped with new insights, new ideas. A game without a purpose is a game without a soul. I want to see games that make better people, and empower them to make a better family, a better community, a better world. Experiences that can be loved not for the time they kill, but for the love they give back.
Why games? Why not theater? Why not more free-form software? I will always do those to. But the videogame tradition is my form. It's what I grew up with, and it's what I understand; understand well enough to know that with enough stumbling, enough novel mistakes, we can do things within this tradition that can change the world - the one inside as well as the one outside - in ways no world has been changed before. What place I have in taking my form from here to there, the next 25 years will tell.

I was going to update this space today, but I don't think I will after all. The words I wrote above have often returned to me in the last six years, and reminded me of why I'm here. More often than not they have made me feel terrible that I am not living up to my younger idealist self, but you know what? Now is the time. I am an independent developer again, but this time I am armed with more practical experience than I could have dreamed of in 2012. Now is the time to make 25-year-old me proud.
